● Hakama, tobi, harem: cuts that come from Japan
The hakama is the traditional Japanese trouser: wide, pleated, so full that it is often mistaken for a skirt. Worn by the samurai, it is still used in martial arts such as kendo and aikido. It is where the Japanese taste for wide legs and freedom of movement comes from.
The tobi, or nikka, is the trouser of Japanese construction workers: very baggy at the thigh, gathered at the calf, it even works as a tactile warning on a building site.
